Fun Run Walk 2011

This year the City of Lapwai celebrates 100 years as an incorporated city within the State of Idaho. Until the 1960′s, it was referred to as the Village of Lapwai and was a separate entity from Fort Lapwai. However, the Lapwai Valley has a rich and deep history that reaches beyond the 100 years of the city and fort’s existence. We want to celebrate and record this history in book form and with a walking path through our community at a future date. During this event, we plan to make contact with those who have lived here and experienced this wonderful place. Our hope is to capture the stories and images of the past that includes the Nez Perce people, the farmers, the businesses, the buildings, and the lay of the land.

Lapwai Memory Board

The Lapwai Local History Book Committee will kick off their history project at the Lapwai 2011 Centennial Celebration events on Saturday July 9 and Sunday July 10, 2011. Look for our booth.  Mr. Dan Wilson, a long time resident of Lapwai, Brian McCormack, the son of Ms. Virginia Hubbard Browne and Mr. Jim McCormack and Ann McCormack, daughter of Margaret McDonald McCormack and Levi Warren McCormack are serving on the Committee.

You can help by bringing the Committee any photos, stories, family memories, etc. about your home town of Lapwai to share at the history booth in the Lapwai City Park on Saturday or Sunday. Since the committee is just beginning the research phase of the project they will be collecting information about the people, places and things of Lapwai for the next year. The committee will have a scanner at the booth to copy anything that people are willing to bring forward now and a signup sheet if you want the Committee to meet with you one on one in a more private setting. We  thank you in advance for any information you are willing to share to make this project a success.

-  Ann McCormack

As part of our Lapwai Days 2011 Celebration we would like to extend to you and everyone in your community an invitation to participate in our Lapwai Days Fun Run/Walk. Good health is and has always been an important part of our families. The fun run is participants taking part for their own enjoyment rather than competition. You are invited to a FREE showings of “H2Oil,” a movie about the Tar Sands in Alberta, Canada on Wednesday, May 11, 2011, first viewing in the Cave, 116 Main Street, at 5:00pm and once outside in the Lapwai City Park around dusk. Water is Life, “Tu Beta Ts’ena”, is the title of the second film that will be shown in the Cave immediately following H2Oil.

You are invited to come view these movies to learn first hand the seriousness of the Megaloads issue. The Nez Perce tribe has been forced into the Megaloads controversy because these mammoth metal drums are slated to travel on the Northwest Passages Scenic By Way – All American Roads Highway 12 by truck and trailer from Lewiston to Lolo Pass through the Nez Perce Reservation.

Both documentaries are moving and compelling films inspired by the First Nations of Alberta, Canada. These passionate documentaries challenges Alberta’s aggressive Tar Sands exploitation and confronts the impacts these enormous developments are having on the waters, lands, animals and people of Northern Alberta, Northwest Territories and the Mackenzie River Water Basin.

Water is important to all of us; therefore we encourage you to attend the premiere viewing of these films.

This presentation is brought to you through the partnership of the Lapwai City Council, the Nez Perce Tribe’s Energy Committee and the Lapwai Spur Committee. Contact Ann McCormack, Economic Development Planner at 208 843 7324 ex. 6 or annm@nezperce.org if you need more information.
